Notes

» You will have to book a room to ensure it's availability.

» Access to the Internet and other UQ network resources are available to staff and students in most centrally controlled lecture rooms, check the Room information to be sure.

Room Information

» To locate or check if a room is a centrally controlled room, you will need to check the Academic Facilities website. (The links to follow are 'Room Information' on the left, then 'Teaching Room - Attributes' on the right.)

» If your room is not listed then it is not a centrally controlled room and the instructions on this page do not apply. Please contact the building's management or reception staff for bookings and facilities inquiries.

Campus Network

Only rooms marked with the 'Campus network' attribute have access to the Internet and network resources. Please check the availability of this attribute by navigating to the specific campus/building/room.

Be Prepared

Apart from organising a laptop or computer for the talk, you will also need to have;

» A Category 5 network cable (usually blue) to connect your laptop to the data-point.
» A correctly configured network adaptor on your computer or laptop.
» A web browser configured to use central web proxies.
» A UQ Sign-in username and password.

Network Cable

A network cable is used to connect your computer's network card or adaptor to the available dataport in a centrally controlled lecture room. Cables can be purchased from the UQ Connect Centre at $5.50inc GST for a 2 Meter length cable or borrowed from your own IT Department. If asked, be sure to specify a Category 5 'Straight Through' cable. If longer length cables are required please contact the ITS Parts and Procurement St Lucia Office on (07) 336 53938.

Correctly configuring your network adaptor or laptop

This means setting up your computer or laptop to accept a dynamic IP addresses this service is commonly called DHCP.

Setup Guides for your computer

All computers on a network must have a unique Internet Protocol (IP) Address. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a system of server assigned IP addresses which are issued and renewed on demand. This prevents IP Address conflicts and allows automatic network connection when you insert network cable into the data point. Security can still be maintained with passwords and restrictions on IP address ranges.

Web browser Configuration

Staff or students wishing to access the Internet or web pages not hosted by UQ will also need to configure central proxy settings for their web browser. They will also require an active UQ Sign In account, traffic and download are monitored by ITS so discretion is advised on downloads. Web browsers must be configured to use either the autoproxy configuration or the manual proxy configuration. See UQ proxy configuration guides on how to setup your web browser.

Please note that only port 80 is open on the proxy server which does allow web browsing but may not work for downloading, or software applications which require use of other ports. For situations which may require this, you will have to request a specific and static IP address. This can be done by contacting help@its.uq.edu.au

What is a UQ ?

Your UQ Sign-in is a unified password system which gives you access to my.UQ, Internet , Calendar, WebCT, and other centralised UQ authenticated systems. To find out if you have a UQ Sign-in please visit http://uq.edu.au/uqsignin/ or call the HelpDesk on 33656000.

Troubleshooting

If you are not able to access Internet or network there are a couple of things you can do to check connectivity.
1. Do you have a green or amber light on where your network cable plugs in?
2. Have you restarted your laptop / computer?
3. Can you browse local UQ web sites such as http://www.uq.edu.au ?
4. If you have a software firewall installed on your laptop / computer make sure it is not set to block traffic from UQ network.
5. A simple test to determine if you have network connectivity is the ping command to 130.102.2.15, instructions for Microsoft Windows can be found here. mac OS 10 here
6. There could be a general network or electrical outage with the building at the moment.
