University of Queensland: Information Technology Services

Introduction

UQ Calendar is an initiative of Information Technology Services to provide the University of Queensland with an effective web based calendar. At present there is no standard shared calendar within the University, and finding a suitable meeting time can be a time consuming and inefficient process. Whilst other calendar systems exist around campus (such as Exchange and Netscape Calendar), they do not address two important requirements:
  • The need for a University wide calendaring system that includes all general staff, academics and students, and allows bookings to be made reliably with any University member.
  • The need for a cost effective and portable solution. UQ Calendar is free to all staff and students and can be readily accessed from anywhere in the world.
Getting Started

UQ Calendar is a web-based solution. It is delivered via the Internet and viewed using a Web Browser. To launch the calendar go to: http://calendar.uq.edu.au

You will need to login using your UQ user ID & password (also known as your Kerberos ID).

Navigating the Calendar

The first screen you will see after logging into UQ Calendar is your default calendar screen. At the top left of this screen are four tabs which provide access to a variety of UQ functions.

Every task you perform in the calendar will occur in one of these tabs, so you will need to become familiar with the functions available in each screen. A brief summary of the tools available in each tab is included below - please click the tab icons for further details.

 The View Tab

The 'View' Screen is displayed by default when you login into your calendar. It consists of your default calendar view, a mini month calendar, and a series of buttons that allow you to create events and tasks, and customise settings. Please click the 'View' icon for further details.

 The Calendars Tab

The 'Calendars' tab allows you to create new calendars and subscribe or unsubscribe to shared calendars. Please click the 'Calendars' icon for more information on this screen (including instructions for subscribing to other calendars).

 The Groups Tab

The 'Groups' tab can be used to collect various calendars together, enabling the calendars to be viewed in a single screen. Click the icon above for further details.

 The Options Tab

The 'Options' tab allows you to change the appearance and behaviour of your calendar. You can also import and export calendar formatted data. It's a good idea to update some of your key settings the first time you log in (e.g. rules relating to notification and reminder mails). Click the 'Options' icon for further information.
