A major upgrade of the whole university network has been agreed and will provide significantly improved speed and access. The upgrade will bring the on-campus networks up to a new faster standard and will include a tenfold increase in the reach of the University’s wireless network, which will extend the reach of the network to most buildings and open spaces on our campuses and University sites. There will also be upgrades to the network links between our campuses and sites and we will be piloting a high definition video-conferencing system running across the network.

ITS has established a set of projects to undertake this upgrade; each concentrating on particular aspects of the network upgrade, and, together, these projects form the Phoenix programme.

The Phoenix programme will be managed by a steering committee with wide representation, as well as an advisory committee with representatives from each Faculty and Institute together with representatives of central service divisions, so as to achieve the widest possible input into the advisory process.
